Audition Monologue: “The Secret Ingredient”
(The scene starts with Grandma hunching over an imaginary cauldron, stirring it with a large wooden spoon. She suddenly stops, sniffs the air, and looks directly at the audition panel with a mischievous grin.)
“Do you smell that? Ahhh… coriander, swamp frog sweat, and just a pinch of pulverized toenails. Perfection. * (She takes a small sip, then winces slightly) * Ooh, needs more arsenic. Everyone thinks being the family elder means I just sit in my room and knit straightjackets. But no! I am the keeper of the brew. The mistress of the medicine cabinet!
(She leans in closer, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper)
Wednesday came to me this morning. She wanted something to ‘calm her nerves’ because of this new boy. A normal boy from Ohio! Can you believe it? So I gave her a little vial of my special mixture. One drop makes you blind, two drops makes you bald,
and three drops makes you vote third party. I can’t remember which one I gave her, but either way, dinner tonight is going to be absolutely spectacular!
(She cackles loudly, then abruptly stops and holds up a finger)
Oh, don’t look at me like that. A little chaos keeps a family close. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go feed the acrimonious centipedes in the basement before they eat Uncle Fester’s mattress again.”
